You hold me in the crease of my elbow and we walk slowly and I feel your warmth run over my skin. I lean a little to the left to feel your body closer and I cannot wait to face you again so I can see the blue in your eyes. The eyes that make me drift into a thousand memories.
You come to me in the mornings and place yourself on my lap and I hold you gently. It seems as if my body and yours have become one, and there is a comfort, a lightness to the curves of your hips as they sink into me. The familiarity of your body is there, meshing with mine, and it brings me back to when we were kids, holding one another, experimenting with touch. We still do.
You know exactly when to come to me. It’s when my darkness has forgotten what light feels like. You lay your head against my chest and I can feel your energy enter me, making my lungs breathe mindfully again and the world slows. Your touch allows me to forget my pain, even if it’s just for a moment. I want you to get lost in my arms and gentle hands. I want to hold you until the sun sets and then rises again.
You have walked this earth with grace, and with your stride you have come into many lives that have needed you. The knowledge you bring, the experience and wisdom, has helped hundreds of educators strive to be their best, and with that you have impacted thousands of students. Your humility will brush off that compliment and deny it. You are humble, but to many, perhaps without them knowing it, you are a hero.
You have not walked into wars or burning buildings, but you have walked into hearts, into lives, and made them stronger, better, and for that you are a hero. We should all be so fortunate to honestly say we have had an impact and helped change someone’s life. You have changed many lives that needed you to come to them at their moment of uncertainty.
You are my wife, and you have saved me a thousand times from the wars in my mind. You have given me purpose, which is to make sure that you know you are loved. If I can do that one thing in this lifetime, to drive you wild with love, I have accomplished what I needed to.
You come near me and make me feel alive because my heart beats a little stronger when you are close. Our love has guided us for decades, and it has pathed a path where we have walked what seems like a million miles, changing together in harmony with each step. To grow together, to accept the changes that have happened to our bodies, minds, values, and ideals, has allowed us to stay close. To continue to grow and love, we had to change together.
You are the part of my life that I hold sacred. Your love for me has made you my hero. To be loved so hard is a gift that I do not take for granted. I know what I want, and it is to stroll through this life, to live simply, wandering an unmapped path, breathing in the cool mountain air, walking the cobbled streets of some foreign city, reading great novels, having experiences that make me reflect on them often, and doing it all knowing that you will be at my side, holding the crease of my elbow or having your hand get lost in mine. Then, when the end of this journey comes, taking my last breaths looking into your eyes, sharing gentle tears of love, knowing that we shared a lifetime together, and l happily drift into conscious sleep, knowing that you are near, my love, my hero. We will never be separated, even by death, because our energy will always be alive within one another. You are my breath.
